Journal, 1827 Jun 20-1828 Apr. 18 / A. F. Stone.

This journal by Mrs. Stone for "My dear Father" (Joseph Frost, of Marlborough, N. H.) records the voyage of Mrs. Stone and her husband, the Rev. Cyrus Stone, from New York to Calcutta, India and eventually to Bombay under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.). They embarked from New York on June 20, 1827 on the ship Emerald and arrived in Calcutta on Oct. 27, 1827; they finally reached Bombay on Dec. 29th. They were assigned to the A.B.C.F.M.'s mission station in Bombay (later called the Mahratta Station). The journal ends with a letter to her father explaining that the journal is to be carried by the Rev. Mr. Fyvie, an English missionary, who is returning to England. He will arrange for the journal to be sent onward to America. The annual reports of the A.B.C.F.M. of 1827 note Mr. Stone's educational preparations for his service in India and the reports from 1828 to 1835 note Mr. Stone's preaching activities. On Aug. 7, 1833 Mrs. Stone died in Bombay of "an affection of the liver." Their two children returned to America under the care of Capt. Spaulding of Boston and arrive in New York in May 1834. The journal records the events of the voyage to India, comments on fellow passengers, religious life aboard various ships and first impressions of life in India.
